- Since several people have asked, I'm posting the following info to the
- group.
-
- I've found on the net two generic editors of system exclusive (sysex)
- data. Both can be configured for almost any device, including the i5S.
- The configuration still gives quite a bit of work, but is done once for
- all. And if several people buy the same editor, we can share
- configuration files.
-
- The one I prefer is simply called 'Editor'. It seems to be the most
- recent one. It can receive and transmit sysex data (although I've
- encountered transmission errors in the demo version). The editor windows
- can be user-designed, with mouse-activated drag and resize facilities.
- It seems to be designed primarily as a sound/program editor, but I think
- it can also be adapted to edit other kinds of sysex data, like
- arrangements, global settings, etc. The price is US$ 40. Download:

-
- The other one is caled 'Winsysex'. It can only transmit sysex data to
- the MIDI instrument (it has no receive function). The design of editor
- windows is not as flexible as with the 'Editor'. Configuration
- (especially implementing the conversion between 8 and 7 bit formats)
- also seems to be a lot harder. I must say I haven't experimented with
- the demo version of this one as much as with the 'Editor'. The price is
- US$ 39. Download: http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/midi/10000039.html (also
- http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/midi/10000040.html, but these are additional
- data for a Kaway model, shouldn't be of much interest to Korg users).
-
- I think both of these editors can be configured for editing i5S
- programs, arrangements, global data, etc. Regarding styles, I think it
- will be unnatural to edit them by modifying numeric and/or binary data,
- which is what these programs do. So, we might need to develop some
- program to translate from MIDI files or backing sequences to styles (I
- may try to do that, if I end up keeping my i5S, but it will take some
- time). Then we can use one of these editors for tuning some additional
- style parameters.
-
- Happy editing,
-
